Formal
wear that measures up to the movies, the Juno's, and your wedding day spotlight
Reviewing Charlene Downey, Supervisor of Tuxedo Royale
With
appearances
at the Juno's each year, in movie productions like 'The Tuxedo', and of
course, at a
ton of local weddings, Tuxedo Royale's styles are clearly ready for the
spotlight. They have always come highly recommended by both The Ring's grooms
and some of the community's top bridal shops. After twenty-nine years in the business and a standard
'best price guarantee', they know exactly
how to take even the most ordinary guy and turn him into that handsome man
you'll be meeting at the altar. That's why we sat down with Charlene Downey, Supervisor
the Tuxedo Royale locations, to find out more about Tuxedo Royale's formal wear
fame...
100% Canadian from the start...
In the 70's, Ivan
Zichy and his good friend Kevin Slaney
were in high school and working for a formal wear shop in Toronto learning the ins and outs of the formal wear business.
At the same time, they were also taking notes on some of the problems that went
along with that business - what wasn't working for clients. Ivan and
Kevin decided that they could take the basics of the formal wear industry, do it
themselves, and do it better. With a focus on treating customers and fellow
employees with no less than top notch respect, they opened their first Tuxedo
Royale store in 1979 and haven't altered their main goals since. Tuxedo Royale
now has thirteen locations across Ontario.
When
we asked Charlene about her role in the company, we could tell that this was
a woman who loves what she does. Charlene was proud to tell us that she started
working for Tuxedo Royale over twenty years ago, "... because of the way they
treat employees within this company, as people... It's a happy, fun job. I
get to meet people from all walks of life, on what will be one of the most
exciting and memorable days of their lives."
Stocking up to suit you
It would almost be easier to tell you what Tuxedo Royale doesn't do, than cover
all of the different formal wear services they offer. Tuxedo Royale not only rents
everything a man could ever need for a wedding day appearance, but they also sell
endless styles of formal wear and accessories. To give you an idea, they display over 40 of the trendiest tuxes in their showroom, they carry over 80 different vest and tie colours,
they offer 8 styles and colours of shirts, and they can fit just about anyone - from a
boy's 3 to a men's 72. Tuxedo Royale can also stylize your man with canes, hats, shoes
and pocket squares. If this sounds like a lot, that's okay. Tuxedo Royale's
staff can walk you through what's hot, what's not, what your man will look best
in.
Styles that truly suit you
Since Tuxedo Royale owns their inventory,
they say they're not 'a middle man'. What this means to you is that they can
handle any last minute problems, accommodate out of town attendants, and make
sure that grooms can always see the products in person before they rent them.
And the decades of
experience that Tuxedo Royale offers translates into
the ability to assist
bewildered grooms in making the right formal wear choices. Charlene says that trying
on the various choices is not an option, it's a must, "You definitely need
to try on different styles of suits and tuxedos before you choose. You can't
just pick out one you like and give us your size. It's much more customized than
that."
Charlene also suggests that brides send a swatch of the bridal and bridesmaids'
dresses along with
your groom - whether you plan to go with him
to pick
out tuxedos or not (but

especially
if you don't!). At the very least, make sure he knows if you are wearing white
or off-white so that his shirt can compliment, not clash, with your dress.
Measuring
up
After
you've decided on a style - from James Bond classy to trendy pinstripes - the
guys are measured up. Charlene insists that having your measurements taken by someone
that knows what they're doing is a must, "... a professional seamstress or one of our
staff,
not your mother or fiancée with the stiff old measuring tape from your tool box."
The last thing you need are sleeves that are two inches too short!
Online convenience
One of the trendiest things we found out about Tuxedo Royale (besides their
amazing apparel, of course), is that you can make reservations at midnight with
a glass of wine - online! The Tuxedo Royale website exhibits a full gallery of styles,
colours, labels, and ideas. Who knew?! Not only that, you can also download and
print a measurements form to take into any place where professional measurements can be done (usually at no charge).
After measuring up, you can submit your numbers online to ensure a proper fit with zero
hassle. Each tuxedo will be perfectly sized to fit and ready for pick-up before
the wedding.
Precious time
The
last thing you need the day before your wedding is MORE pick-ups, stops and
details to worry about... that's why we love Tuxedo Royale's policy of pick-up
three nights prior to the wedding. That means if your wedding is on a Saturday,
you can pick-up the complete tuxedo order on Wednesday night and not have to
worry about it again. This is also a great way to ensure that if, by some
chance, something doesn't fit quite right, there is time to fix the problem.
You'll definitely enjoy this extra time, as well, if you plan to go away for
your wedding and need to pick-up all the tuxedos before you leave. Whatever
special circumstances or requests you have, they will do their best to
accommodate and make whatever arrangements are necessary... they've even been
known to personally deliver items in some cases.

the experts: the groom's glossary
TUXEDOS
Cutaway
and Stroller
For
formal daytime weddings (11am to 6pm), the groom wears the
cutaway/morning coat, which tapers from the front waist button to a
long, back tail. Accessories include a wing-collar shirt with an ascot
and a coordinating vest. Attendants wear the stroller/walking coat,
which is cut slightly longer than a suit jacket, and is worn with a
laydown collar shirt and a four-in-hand tie. Both jackets, either in
black or grey, are worn with matching striped trousers. |
Dinner
Jacket
A
white or ivory jacket with matching trousers is an ideal option in
spring and summer months or year-round in warmer climates for formal and
semiformal evening weddings. |
Tuxedo
A single or
double breasted jacket with matching trousers for formal or semiformal
evening weddings, tuxes come in a variety of fabrics. Accessories
include a dress shirt with cuff links and studs, and a bow tie with a
vest or cummerbund. |
White
Tie -
This
is the classic choice for the ultra formal evening wedding. The tailcoat
jacket is short in front with two long back tails. A white piqué (a
waffle-textured fabric in cotton or cotton blend) front wing-collar
shirt, tie, and vest are also worn. Tailcoats can be worn for formal
daytime or evening weddings. |
Lapels
Tuxedo
jackets come with three basic lapel styles. Some are more flattering to
certain body types. But for the most part, choosing one that's right for
you is merely a matter of taste. |
Notch
A triangular
indentation is cut where the lapel joins the collar. |
Peak
A broad
V-shaped lapel that points up and out just below the collar line. |
Shawl
A smooth,
rounded lapel.
SHIRTS
The
primary difference between shirt styles is in the collar style usually
comes in many different colours, with or without pleats, stripes, or
other decorations.
Banded
Collar (Mandarin)
A collar that
stands up around the neck and above the buttons; this contemporary style
is not worn with a tie… a decorative button cover is used. |
Classic
Shirt
The
traditional formal shirt is white with buttons or stud closures. It may
or may not have French cuffs and usually has pleats on either side of
the buttons or studs. |
Laydown
(Spread) Collar
Similar
to a man's standard button-front shirt, it folds over around the neck
with a wide division between points in front. |
Wing Collar
Similar to a
band collar but with two turned-down points in front that give the
appearance of a spread collar.
ACCESSORIES
Your
wedding may be the only day in your life that you have more accessories
to coordinate than your wife does. Think how the whole picture will look
if you depart from the traditional black for more than one or two of
your accessories.
Ascot
A wide
necktie (almost like a scarf) that is looped over and held in place
beneath the chin with a tie tack or stickpin. Worn with a wing-collar
shirt and the daytime wedding cutaway jacket. |
Bow
Tie
A
short tie shaped like a bow that can be worn with a wing or spread
collar. A shirt's wing collar can either be tucked behind the bow tie or
worn facing out over the tie. Most bow ties adjust to fit all neck sizes
and are available in a variety of widths, colours, and patterns to
coordinate and complement the rest of the bridesmaids. |
Cuff
Links
Decorative
jewellery used to close French cuffs. |
Cummerbund
A silk or
satin sash as an alternative to a vest worn at the waist and covering
the trouser's waistband. A cummerbund should be worn with the pleats
facing up. |
Euro
Tie
A
long, knotted square-bottom necktie worn with a wing or spread collar. |
Four-in-hand
Tie
A
standard long knotted necktie worn with a spread collar. This is the
traditional name for the type of tie most men wear to work. |
Pocket
Square
A
small pocket handkerchief tucked into the left breast pocket worn by
groomsmen instead of a boutonniere. |
Studs
Jewellery similar to cuff links that are used to close the front of a formal
tuxedo shirt, which traditionally does not have buttons down the front.
Studs usually come in sets of four. |
Vest
Worn in place
of a cummerbund to cover the trouser waistband with bottom vest button
left unbuttoned. It's often worn with a coordination bow tie. Some are
adjustable at the neck and waist with an open back, while others have a
fully covered back. If you think you might remove your jacket during the
reception, opt for a full-back vest. |
